Why You Should Try Water Meditation

Buddhists regard water as essentially tranquil, serene, pure, and a method towards a clear mind. Ancient Romans considered water to have healing properties, and used baths as a cultural experience to unwind and connect with their community in a peaceful setting. In ancient Chinese culture, water was seen as the balance between the body and physical harmony. In Christianity, water is seen as a purifier – a chance to be reborn into salvation and a way to cleanse the spirit. Most people today feel a sense of peace and serenity when sitting by any body of water, and many use showers and baths as a way to cleanse the body and spirit of stress and negative emotions. Many also listen to the calming waves of the ocean to relax and clear their minds.

  1. Water Is Affected By Emotions

Water molecules can be visibly affected by positivity and negativity. Water surrounded by feelings of love, compassion, unity, and beauty has perfect, complete molecules. Water surrounded by negative emotions like hatred, anger, and disgust mutate into deformed molecules. Our bodies are mostly water, so we need to be careful what kind of emotions we’re subjecting it to. Being by a body of water, where many come to relax, have fun, and produce positive feelings absorbed by the water, helps you to feel the power of these emotions radiating off the body of water.

  1. Water Is Naturally Calming

The sounds of the ocean, while sometimes loud and always continuous, are much more subtle than the sounds of voices, music, cars, and general bustle of everyday life. The simple sounds of pushing and pulling remind us of the serenity of yin and yang, and the rolling waves can help to put your mind at ease. The color blue is also naturally calming, and is often associated with peace, wisdom, calmness, and openness.

  1. Water Allows For Easy Meditation

Have you ever found yourself simply staring into the big blue? That’s because our ‘monkey minds’ are distracted enough by the sensory input of the ocean (the salty, sun kissed beach, the expansiveness of the ocean, the way the water hits the tips of rippling waves and glitters). This distraction is subtle enough to keep your mind occupied, while allowing you to relax it and let it wander. Staring out into the ocean gives your monkey mind something to do and lets your soul talk instead.

Water meditation is great for those who have problems ‘turning their brains off’, and can be done in five easy steps!

  1. Find a quiet, secluded spot near a body of water – it can be as small as a pond or as big as the ocean.
  2. Find somewhere comfortable to sit – try to sit directly on the ground if possible.
  3. Relax your body – focus on relaxing each part of your body, beginning with the tips of your toes and ending with the top of your head. When you are done, mentally scan your body to see if there are any places that are still tense.
  4. Take in your surroundings – simply observe the way the water moves, or how the sun shines off of it, or how to breeze feels on your skin. You don’t have to specifically focus on anything, let your mind water as well as your eyes.
  5. Try to be in the now – if you find your mind wandering to what happened yesterday, or might happen tomorrow, or what will happen today, correct yourself and bring your focus back to what is in front of you now.

If you are fortunate enough to live close to the water, get out there and try this out today! If not, make it a point to visit some body of water whenever you can – it works wonders!
