Unlike the major arcana, minor arcana cards deal with mundane matters and minor life events. In the minor arcana, the cards are broken up into four suits: pentacles, wands, swords, and cups. Much like a deck of cards, in each suit you will find an ace, numbers one through ten, and four court cards (page, knight, queen, and king).

Aces usually suggest a new beginning. An ace in the beginning of a reading can show the influence of this new start. If an ace is at the end of a reading, it can either sum up the cards laid before it or it can mean a new beginning is afoot. The suit of the ace can predict when the transformation will begin. Pentacles are spring, cups are summer, wands are autumn, and swords are winter.

Pentacles represent the final stage of an idea: the manifestation. They show the outcome of an idea, the outcome of the action, and the final form of thought. If you have several pentacles in your reading, it could mean that your idea is in the process of being formed or will soon be formed. The key words of pentacles are realization, manifestation, prosperity, and proof.

tarot suitsSwords represent acting upon an idea. They show the struggles of the physical component of displaying an idea; the hard work put in to making this idea a reality. Having many swords in a reading may indicate moving forward, agitation, or determination of the transition from idea to reality. The key words in the suit of swords are movement, action, keenness, and struggle.

Cups represent the transition between the concept of an idea and the process of acting on it. This suit usually deals with emotions and the connecting of ideas with emotions. Having several cups show up in a reading means that emotions are your main concern. A tragedy or a great joy has happened or may happen, and emotions are high. The key words for cups are desire, emotion, spirit, and inner experiences.

Wands represent the formulation and intent of ideas. If you find a lot of wands in your reading, it usually means your ideas are still being formulated or that your problems do not pertain to the physical world. Your problems lay in your thought process. To me, wands represent the right side of the brain – the creative brain. The key words found in wands are growth, ambition, ideas, and expansion.

These are just the generalizations of each minor arcana suit. Each card, ace through king, will have a different meaning based on the categories listed here. Have fun and try to do some readings on yourself!
