A spread is how you lay the cards out in tarot readings.

You can always make your own spread by relating the question you have in mind to the categories of tarot. For example, if the question is concerning a relationship, you can have past, present, future, unseen elements, and projected outcome as category slots for your cards. The order of the cards and their categories does not matter, as long as you know which refers to what. If a card – or all the cards – confuse you, you can always pick up the next card in the deck (no need to shuffle) as a clarification card.

An easy spread to start with is the one card spread. You begin by shuffling the deck while thinking of a question. This spread uses one card either picked out of the deck or by turning the top card over after shuffling. You can look up the meaning of the card in relation to the general topic of your question, but I like to reference Tarot Made Easy.

Another easy spread to try is the three card spread.

Shuffle while thinking of your question and split the deck into three piles. You can choose which represents past, near future, and outcome. Choose the top card off of each deck. Look into the meaning based on the Focus categories of each card, and then to the categories related to your specific question. The past pile represents who you used to be or what made you into who you are today. The near future pile represents new ideas or situation that will come to be. The outcome pile represents the final results based on the card in the near future slot.

Try out these spreads on yourself and see what your spirit guides and future have to say!
