9 ways to live in the now

By: Missy Marston

Our brains love to keep us in the past and future, but our true selves flourish in the now. That’s why it’s important to train your mind to stop wandering into what has happened and what might happen, and instead to focus on what is happening around you in the present.

So, how can we train ourselves to stop thinking about the past and future? If you feel that you have a hard time staying in the now, try out some of these techniques!

  1. Take A Walk

Give yourself time to connect with nature. Go outside and take a short walk and pay attention to your surroundings. Try to find the beauty in something – a bird, the sun, the breeze, the weather. Find at least one thing in your surroundings that can make you smile.

  1. Give Thanks

Take a minute each day to give gratitude for what you have in your life. Thank the universe for simply existing and that you exist in it. Look around yourself and find something beautiful and simply appreciate it.

  1. Breathe!

When you find yourself overwhelmed or stuck thinking about what has been or might be, take a moment to simply breathe and focus on the rhythm. Be conscious of taking in new, positive energy with each breath and letting go of used, negative energy with each exhale.

  1. Pay Attention To Your Thoughts

If you find yourself thinking about the past or the future, simply tell your mind to stop. Take a brief look around you and take in your surroundings, and then focus on them. Take a moment to think about where you are and your task at hand.

  1. Don’t Multi-Task

Keep your focus on what you are doing in the now. Don’t eat while watching TV, instead focus on your meal and the taste. Eat slowly and really taste each bite. Don’t cook while you clean. Keeping each activity your only priority helps you to keep your mind where you are in the moment.

  1. Give Yourself Extra Time

Don’t rush yourself! Giving yourself some extra time between appointments, meetings, coffee runs, showering, exercising, eating, etc. will keep you from thinking about what needs to be done throughout the day, and keeps you in the now. Rushing makes most feel panicked, and panic keeps your mind in the future when it should be in the present.

  1. Stop and Meditate for Five Minutes

Give yourself at least five minutes each day to stop everything and clear your mind. Sit in silence and simply be.

  1. Listen

When having a conversation, try not to focus on what was said and what you will say. Instead, make it a point to only listen to what is being said. It will be easier for you to absorb the information and your conversational partner will be pleased that you are paying attention.

  1. Wake Up and Be Still

Each morning I like to write down my dreams and sit in bed for a few minutes. Try not to check your phone first thing. If you have a pet, sit and pet them for a few minutes, or simply enjoy the morning – the rays of sunshine flowing into your room, the snow settling on your windowsill, the chirp of the birds outside. You will start your day off calmly and happily instead of rushed and already planning out your day!

What all the steps have in common is attention. Instead of giving all of your attention to reviewing your day or plans you have for later, focus on what is happening around you.

Each moment is a gift and it’s up to you to receive it! Love and Light to you all!
